Anderson' with a length of 767 ft, dwarfs the West Breakwater Lighthouse while entering the harbor waters along the shores of Lake Erie in Lorain, Ohio to start the 2010 Shipping Season. Arriving in ballast to load aproximately 25,000 tons of Taconite for Zug Island in Detroit, MI and yes the lighthouse is leaning thanks to hits by freighters on at least 2 occasions in it's 93 year history. Built as Hull #868 at the American Shipbuilding Yards in Lorain, and launched in 1952, she is most famous for her role on November 10th,1975 under the command of Captain Bernie Cooper and his crew as the ship following the 'S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald' on the stormy Lake Superior and for going back out in the stormy seas to search for the 'Fitz'.

The Tug - 'John Francis' The tug 'John Francis' prepares to pass the "West Breakwater Lighthouse" with an empty sediment barge in tow as it enters the harbor waters in Lorain, Ohio.

A Tug and a Light! The tug 'Iowa' prepares to pass the 'Cleveland West Breakwater Light' and head out onto a wavy Lake Erie to assist in the arrival of the 'M/V Edgar Lehmann'. The light which was built in 1911 is just a tad older than the tug which was built around 1916. The Cleveland Water Intake Crib can be seen in the distance on the far right. The tall tower is being used to evaluate winds on Lake Erie for the feasability of 'Wind Farms' to generate electricity. The tower stands 165 ft above the crib which is 3.5 miles offshore. She is the 2nd 'Salty' to arrive in the 2009 season on April 7th, 2009.

The "Ryerson" Returns! After 2 days at anchor, 2 miles offshore waiting for the winds, waves and a salty the steamer "Edard L. Ryerson" passes the Lorain West Breakwater Light as she arrives with a load of "Taconite" in Lorain,. OH. Her last visit to Lorain was on Dec. 2nd, 2007.

Riding Out a Gale! The steamer "Edward L. Ryerson" between the lights, at anchor 2 miles off of Lorain, OH with a load of "Taconite" riding out the gale force winds on Lake Erie. With steady winds on Tues. of 35 knots and gusts as high as 50 knots and 7-10 ft. waves she made an initial attempt to enter the harbor but broke it off and went to anchor. Still at anchor on Weds. afternoon.
